Almost half of survey respondents were admitted via the early decision I track. Regular decision followed closely with 39% of respondents being admitted that way.

“I applied regular decision because I didn’t have a top school and wanted to keep my chances open,” first-year Becca Carp said. “I also didn’t want to make a binding financial decision and close myself off to potential scholarships.”

The top five other universities students were admitted to were Indiana University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Tennessee Knoxville, University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“I was also considering UC Berkeley, but I ultimately chose Vanderbilt because it better coincided with my values in both social and academic life,” first-year Nicole Cai said.

Students were more likely to have utilized application assistance if they were in a higher income bracket. For students with a household income of $1 million or more, 33% used a college counselor and 47% used an ACT/SAT tutor. For students with a household income of $50,000 or less, 5% used a college counselor and 4% used an ACT/SAT tutor.

ADMISSIONS ASSISTANCE/HOUSEHOLD INCOME

Of Vanderbilt’s promotional events, the largest proportion of respondents reported attending Anchor Day, followed by campus tours. Academics was the most common reason for attending Vanderbilt and faculty was the least common.

“I picked Vanderbilt for so many reasons, but mainly because of how incredible their special education department is,” Carp said. “It’s number one in the country and because I knew that was what I would pursue here, it seemed there was no better place to be. I came back and toured after I got in and met with a professor who is now my advisor and a role model to me. The students that I met when I toured really solidified my decision because each one was so impressive, passionate and driven. I wanted to be a part of that type of student body.”
